This game was my first foray into the All Star range after enjoying High Heat on the PS2 and loving the VR Baseballs on the Playstation. Ive always wanted to play the EA game but seeing as its not released in the UK (I cannot find it, anway) there is little to compare this with in terms or quality and quantity. This is as good a baseball package as it is game and although it does take sometime to gain the correct setting for each individual (i currently play it on the hardest level but even things out with a zonal batting strategy and no pitcher aids) there is a lot of fun to be gained after the twiddling of the options. Personally, i beleive that the pitching is a little too hard, balls fly at you a difficult speeds to judge and the camera angles dont help either (causing me to allow the AI to take over). But the batting/pitcher interface is second to none (remember I havent played EAs title) and the uniforms and new stadia as well as the faces and physiques of players are also impeccably represented. The game also has many great extras including interviews with Jeter, Ripkin JR. and genuinley engrossing discussions of the Negro Leagues and players of the past. If I were to have griper, minor ones at that, it would be that sometimes the collision of ball to glove is not always spot on and that awaiting foul balls to drop out of the sky before the at-bat continues can become slow the excitement down. None of the niggly problems detract from the fun to be had, especially if you are a big stat-fuelled fan of the great sport, and you would have to be incredibly picky not to enjoy this in any form.

This game is graphically wonderful and it has a wonderful user interface, its loaded with options and little treats like the cards and trivia but the gameplay is lacking and no-one else seems to have noticed. I have played over a season on it and hitting the ball is pot luck. This is the only complaint i have b ut it is fundamental to the game. You cannot do better than hope to hit a good shot there is little or no skill involved and it is this that makes the EA game superior. I just hope they release the 2004 version in the UK soon.

After owning both the 2002 and 2003 All-Star games, i was a little bit worried that the 2004 game may be just to similar. How wrong was I. This game has got so much deeper youd drown. All 30 Major League teams are featured plus an even more in-depth expansion mode. The usual suspects are there with the card collection and season mode, but there is a new `scenario mode` in which Cal Ripken Jr and Derek Jeter tell you about situations that happened in the 2002 season and you have to complete a related `mission` about that scenario. The players look amazing and bear a heavy resemblence to their Major League counterparts. The gameplay uses a similar interface with cursor pitching and batting but the new depths to the gameplay are incredible. The catcher can appeal a swing, players get ejected, it is possible to get a triple without being easily throw out. Playing the outfield is a little bit trickier but it all looks amazing. This game is a must own for any baseball fan. 10/10, top notch, brilliant, tickety boo.
