Acclaim Atlantis III PS2

Reviewer: scavenga from Sweden
You play the part of a young female archaeologist who stumbles upon a mystery involving the City of Atlantis while searching for Egyptian artefacts, and soon make new friends and enemies. She also discovers a whole new, mysterious world on another level of consciousness, a world in which she must solve puzzles and help people to be able to proceed...
Initially I was very disappointed in Atlantis III, I was under the impression that this would be a point 'n' click'er like Broken Sword or Discworld. The Game mechanics are simple: In a first person view you can rotate your view 360 degrees in all directions, and if the pointer hit something you can pick up, use or someone you can talk to, it changes into a symbol. You then press the X button to execute this action. The action can seem quite stale, at first it feels like you're trapped in some kind of 3d-picture, like "Dracula Repossesed" on PSOne. Soon you'll discover all the little details, which make the scenery come alive. And man, the scenery...
In almost every new screen I wanted to press a button and print out a screenshot to put on my wall. The graphics are beautiful, from photo-realistic scenery to pure sci fi fantasy. The FMV cut-scenes are also very good, but not perfect in motion.
What pleased me about the gameplay was the puzzles. They become increasingly harder and more challenging, and are more than a little satisfying to complete. It's refreshing to do something other than "Find key, open door".
Overall, this would have been a perfect game if developed as a point 'n' click'er, or even with the controls of "Escape From Monkey Island", but it's not. It's also very short, as all these games are. The beautiful graphics and the puzzles save this game from being rubbish, and if you enjoy adventuring on any level, you'll enjoy this on some level too

If you have played Tomb Raider and liked it, then Atlantis III is definately not for you. In fact if you like playing games, full stop, this game will still not be for you ! Lets face it, this game has boring gameplay and difficult and confusing surroundings, and is most probably the worst release for the Playstation 2.
The plot of the game, when you first read it, sounds quite promising. Then, when you put the game into your Playstation you will be ripping the cables out of the machine just to remove the boredom that this game brings.
I have played many so called adventure games and this is quite frankly the worst of the lot. Try something like Tomb Raider and Syphon Filter if you want a proper game !
The only good thing, if you stretch your imagination, is the very high quality graphics that this game brings. The team that made this game should have spent less time on the graphics and more time on the gameplay.
You, the player, do not really exist in the game. You see the game from the eyes of the character. To make the game a lot better, they should have made that game so you can actually see the character you are controlling.
So, please dont buy this if you are expecting to play an exciting game. The original game was created for PC and the wishy-washy change-over to PS2 is sub-standard and should have never have been made.

I am a fan of adventure games, particularly the classics like Broken Sword, Grim Fandango, Longest Journey. I tend to use my consoles more often than my PC, but adventures of this kind are few and far between... which is why Atlantis III piqued my interest. Within ten minutes of playing (if you can call it that) I realised what a terrible mistake Id made. The graphics arent bad, but nothing spectacular. The voice acting plumbs new depths of banality, the story (at least for a newcomer to the series such as myself) is impossibly vague and nonsensical, and the gameplay consists entirely of moving your cursor around the screen hoping to find something to interact with. Its easy to miss that vital clue, and inevitably the game involves much to-ing and fro-ing... and evntually I became completely lost and switched off. If youre a PC owner who likes Myst and its ilk, you may just about wring some enjoyment from this, but there are far better choices available. If youre an adventure lover with a PS2, youd be much better off trying the excellent Shadow Of Memories and Escape From Monkey Island, or waiting for Broken Sword 3.This is the worst videogame I have ever played.
