Kings Field was a game Id always had in the back of mind,I can vaguely remember the review in PSM2 magazine who said it was a bit slow,I saw a cheap copy and thought Id give it a go... I immediately noticed it was from From Software, dont get me wrong I love most of their games,Lost Kingdoms particularly, but this being a first person RPG of sorts I had pangs of it being another Eternal Ring, which is flawed near the beginning and almost unplayable after a while. I played it for a while and to begin with its very similar, but slower, and then I got to the (poisoned)mines,I had flashbacks of the poisoned area in Eternal Ring but stuck with it.. It gets much better, unlike Eternal Ring there are no enemies that kill you instantly, you get far more choice of equipment/spells,I know Eternal Ring has the spell rings but since their creation is almost random they cant be relied on and also you dont die from falling off things all the time,I lost count how many times I died in Eternal ring from falling three inches into a puddle. Its a fairly long game,48 hours plus,to get good enough to tackle the end boss, there are a number of hard bosses, but you can exploit some flaws, like bosses/enemies never or rarely leaving their area and hanging around the doors to pick them off,to defeat them,in fact its possible to stand still and pummel a couple of them with arrows!! It has the same feel as Eternal Ring, similar music and the NPCs are an apathetic bunch, why they changed their names in the US version is beyond me?, Overall, its thankfully a much better game than Eternal Ring and Im glad I took a chance on it.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 05Jul2008 | | | This is one of my favourite PS2 rpgs (the other being Shadow Hearts). I liked the slow pace and the first person perspective. I loved the music and the realistic way battles occur without a screen shattering or battle music playing. Once you have the hang of the strategy - engage, strike, retreat and repeat (also using strafe when needed) the game becomes just right in terms of difficulty. The storyline was a bit sparse and the ending rather difficult (although I could have used a different strategy with the final boss to make it easier). I will definitely play this game again. Not for everyone, though - my 14 year old son loathed it so much he didnt even give it a go!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 31Mar2005 | | | Abandoning the comical and unbelievable manner in which most first person gamers play, with characters zipping about and strafing left to right whilst firing heavy cannons with a surprising degree of accuracy at hordes of hellish beats - this massively atmospheric experience is played at a much more realistic speed. Awesome tenion-building soundtracks and bleak dark landscapes, as well as deadly foes and tricky puzzles all adds up to what is quite simply a unique and highly addictive gaming experience. there is no other game like those in the Kings Field series, and now that this PS2 addition to the series (complete with brilliant graphics) tops the lot. A deeply enthralling story line with a few surprising twists completes the ensemble. Definately not for the feint hearted. Magic.
