This game looks great on paper but in reality its so frustrating - I almost broke it in half, and I only received it yesterday! As someone already said: `The most irritating thing about Chessmaster for Playstation 2 is the size of the chess board, which is tiny`. Apart from the tiny chess pieces that make it hard to play, I find this games controls very hard to handle, in fact, even setting up the players names at the start of the game is so clunky and complex that I quickly lost the will to play chess (almost); not to mention the fact that the chess pieces sometimes appear upside down; and pieces sometimes play all by themselves when clicked on to determine the best route. By comparison the other PS2 chess game called `Play It Chess` is a work of art that is almost hassle free, even tho it has no inbulit help files.
Buyer beware this old Chessmaster chestnut!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 18Apr2008 | | | The presentaion is a strange mix of optimum, in-depth options and modes and the most tasteless game menues. The graphics are great; they are chess pieces and they look like chess pieces. Soothing music helps the gamer to relax, but after time it becomes intolerable. Chess is like Tetris - it will never get old and it will stay a mentally challenging and fun game for years to come. The online factor and the different modes (e.g. chess on a battlefield) give the game a lasting appeal Chessmaster is THE best chess game on the PS2. Granted, its the only chess game, but the Chessmaster series has been great on the PC and now the magic comes alive on the PS2. The online factor sweetens the deal and is a bonus to an already great game.
