 | $29.96 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves -- Game of the Year Edition The roguish fortune-hunter hero Nathan Drake returns in Among Thieves, a high-adventure follow-up to the original Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. In action, Drake employs a movie-set worthy of the most daring video game tomb raiders and relic hunters, with agile running and jumping, light hand-to-hand combat, and a noteworthy talent with small arms. These skills are put to use as the hero once again finds himself adventuring in the wilderness, facing a tricky location-based platform puzzles or vastly outnumbered by bands of violent, heartless bandits. The game runs on the developer's own engine. The character is designed to move with a smooth, realistic flow as he runs, sneaks, climbs, and fires his weapon from nearly any position -- behind makeshift cover, or even while hanging by his fingertips from high on a cliff face or treetop vine. The action shifts seamlessly from one scene to the next, with no loading screens. In this adventure, Drake seeks answers to the mystery of Marco Polo's lost fleet. Great riches and wisdom are tied to the fate of ships and treasure that left China with the famous explorer at the end of the 13th century, but did not arrive with him back home at his final destination. Although Marco Polo took the secrets of the lost ships and crew to his grave, Drake seeks answers on a journey through history, to the fabled Himalayan valley of Shangri-La. The key to the mystery may be a legendary sapphire, known as the wish-fulfilling jewel. Magical properties or no, the billions of dollars the stone would be worth in modern markets should be enough to make nearly any wish come true. In addition to the main single-player story, the game features cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes. Among Thieves was developed by Naughty Dog, the studio that created the original Uncharted as well as other successful Sony-system exclusives. The Game of the Year edition includes the full game, as well as the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune multiplayer pack, the Uncharted 2 Siege expansion pack, four avatar packs, character skin packs, a motion comic bundle, and a downloadable copy of Pinball Heroes: Uncharted for PSP. ~ T.J. +A good challenge overall +Loveable characters +Fantastic voice acting and cinematics +Good sense of humor +Creative puzzles that arent too difficult to learn
Cons:
-It can feel like the game is holding your hand at times -A short adventure overall
About a year after the Playstation 3 launched, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune landed down and became one of the first games to really take advantage of what the PS3 could do. But beyond that, however, Naughty Dog has done a fantastic job creating a simple adventure game thats easy to pick up and learn and yet at the same time can provide a challenge.
You play as Nate, a treasure hunter who has just uncovered to coffin of his ancestor Drake. In the coffin, Nate finds a treasure map leading to the Lost City of Gold: Eldorado. Hes got a journalist tagging along who wants to find a good story as well as a partner named Sully. Of course, Drake isnt the only one after the treasure. Throughout his journey hell not only face the perils of the ruins he discovers but also have to battle pirates. Theres nothing original about the storyline, but the characters are incredibly likeable--particularly Nate himself. The story and dialog within the story is also incredibly well written. As you get yourself into certain skirmishes Nate will also give his own commentary which is sometimes humorous. Thats not the only thing thats humorous. Much of the dialog in the cutscenes is also funny. Its a game that knows its clever but is careful not to rub your face in its wit. It makes a simple story all the more enjoyable.
Gameplay is pretty simple to pick up on and play. For the most part youll be doing one of two things: Solving puzzles or participating in gun fights. When it comes to the games puzzles, most of them are pretty clever, but none of them are too hard. Some puzzles, such as the jumping puzzles, can seem a little threatening, but for the most part Nate does all the jumping automatically. All you have to be doing is facing the right direction and he usually lands a jump. This doesnt mean you cant jump too early, but for the most part, Nate is good at grabbing on ledges. For the most part, gameplay flows incredibly smoothly.
The other aspect of gameplay is the gun fights. Just about every gun fight plays out the same way. You hide behind an object, you pop out and you shoot at your enemy. You can carry two weapons with you at a time and each time you down an enemy you can have their remaining ammunition. While it seems like ammo would be plentiful, its not really. Even if you manage to make every shot count your adversaries can take quite a bit of damage. Luckily theres also melee combat involved. None of it is hard to pick up and learn, though its quite surprising how difficult Uncharted can be. In fire fights where youre surrounded on all sides it can be difficult to find cover to let your health recover. Not to mention you can run low on ammo. And despite the melee combat, it can be hard to pull off on a single enemy when youre being shot by three others. Despite that, when you get the hang of it and you know where to go to get cover, Uncharted can be fun. It can feel a little repetitive at times, but with the good mix of cutscenes that dont drag on and puzzle elements, theres a good amount of variety.
Likewise, youll never find yourself in too dire need of trouble. The game is pretty linear for the most part. Despite all you can see in the environments, its pretty straightforward. Should you find yourself lost the game will point you in the right direction. Just the same, the helpful prompts that remind you how to duck behind cover and how to shoot never stop popping up when it seems like your stuck. It would feel like the game was holding your hand if you couldnt turn these off, but you can and youre allowed to do things yourself. If you ever find the game being too hard or too easy, you can adjust the difficulty level on the fly.
The strongest aspect of Uncharted is without a doubt the games stellar production values. Its quite possibly the best looking PS3 out there. The detail put into the world youre in is incredible. Theres eagle eye attention to detail. When Nate goes into water and emerges, for example, the water is actually dripping off his clothes and they look damp and hell slowly dry off. Not to mention that the lighting effects are fantastic as well. There can be slight dips in frame rate, but you may not actually notice them. The music is also fantastic as it fits the adventure well. Better than the music, however, is the voice cast. Every voice suits each character well but they also put a lot of good emotion into it and inject the right tone when its called for. The production values are one of the reasons to at least check the game out.
While there will without a doubt be some who find the gunplay repetitive, at least the other elements keep the game afloat. If there was anything wrong with Drakes Fortune, it would be that the game is pretty short. Aside from that, its a game thats worth checking out if youre into the Adventure genre.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 29May2009 | | | Small but perfectly formed. That pretty much sums up Uncharted. Almost everything about the game works and works well.
My only real gripes are that its so linear and its impossible to veer from the path thats been set for you, however the gameplay is so much fun you barely notice until you decide to go back to play again. Other than that, its just so short that its over before you really expect it, but thats hardly unique to Uncharted these days.
Ive been looking forward to Drakes next installment and its due later this year - I have no doubt Im going to be wowed again.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 23May2009 | | | This is the most repetitive, clumsy, boring, un-adventurous game I ever played.
The camera controls are unbelievably clumsy. Theres some extremely cheap thing called a `story-line`.
Its constantly the same thing over and over again, shooting enemies, with clumsy targetting using the right controller, you never look in front of you, instead you keep looking at the same, boring, lousy spot.
All enemies keep on re-spawning over and over again, and they all look the same.
The environment is boring to say the least, graphics are horrible too.
None of the great adventurous feeling like Tomb Raider has, no single Whoaah moment, no puzzles whatsoever.
Overal, the worst game i ever played on a console, including the old Commodore C64.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 01May2009 | | | This game is brilliant. I bought it after reading reviews and watching gameplay on youtube and it was not a disappointment. The shooting requires accuracy which is challenging for me and the film-like narration was great. The game is basically one huge story with so many chapters, Drake searching for treasure, all the while having to solve puzzles and shoot his way through. Its crazy! Although its one of the early games, its still popular. Buy it and you wont be disappointed!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 04Apr2009 | | | I was going to call this review `Welcome to the Jungle`, that was too obvious. But, its still apt. A good amount of Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is set in a jungle and the graphics really do welcome you. They are stunning! From the leaves, the grass to the beautiful water effects. When you move from inside to outside the sunlight is actually blinding. Water covered caves glisten when you shine your torch over them. And the views from atop of a cliff...well, you have to see that for yourselves. Also the battles put the guns in Guns and Roses.
Though apt, it isnt the true star of the game, its not even Nathan Drake himself, who makes Lara Croft look like a spoilt brat. The true star is the gameplay mechanic, which is so simple and intuitive, yet has massive depth. The game has three main mechanics, cover/gunplay, climbing and hand to hand combat. Each are honed to perfection so well they work together seemlessly. For example, when an enemy is aproaching, you can leap out of cover, soften up the enemy with a gun shot and then take them down with a single punch (or sometimes a flying kick). Or when hanging off a ledge you can peek up over the top and shoot. Yet, this is all one button stuff, Circle to move (or dive) into cover, X to move around (or over) cover, X to jump to a ledge and Circle to drop down to a ledge. With just those two buttons you can do an array of different moves, that work perfectly in context with the environment. Other games have a cover systems, other games have climbing systems and other games have hand to hand combat. But no games have all three that work so perfectly together. And its sequel is working on added and improving on this wonderful system. I can only imagine how good that will play.
The story is based on the classic matinee films, updated to modern day, which works really well. The pacing of this game is perfect and will give you a good 10 hours. And the pace also helps when you replay the game, which you will want to, because there is plenty to unlock and that Platinum trophy is a must (it took me 5 play throughs to get it!).
Buy this game now and then start saving for Uncharted 2. Because you will need it.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 21Mar2009 | | | Ive just completed this in 13 hours and i totally enjoyed playing it. the graphics are sharp(even at 520 with standard tv cable), the storyline is good, its a fantastic pick up and play game and it is great for all ages. This is a must for all PS3 owners, cant wait for the 2nd installement!!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 30Jan2009 | | | When the next gen consoles were released i ended up with an xbox 360 since the PS3 was taking so long and was looking so pricey, so I have only just got a PS3 now. I have been looking forward to this game for quite a while though so once i got the console i bought this, LBP and Resistance. I played resistance and was really disappointed so my hopes for this game started fading, but luckily i was pleasantly surprised.
The graphics are brilliant, which is really impressive for a title which was released so early in the consoles life- i didnt think the graphics in resistance were anywhere near as impressive. When Drake walks, it looks realistic and any scene involving water is visually brilliant. The story is interesting and seems more like a movie than a game (i thought at the start that the cut scenes might be too numerous but i think they were just right). The voice acting is great, i liked the small touches like the wee comments drake makes to himself whilst hes fighting.
now for the bad points. I know that for adventure games such as this, you have to suspend belief a little bit- i mean, i dont really believe that tombraider is true to life- but when you spend 15 minutes running around, jumping on ledges and swinging on vines to get into ruins no one has been in for 3000 years, only to find 20 commandos with laser sighted rifles, its a bit annoying. How did they get there? I though i had found the only map, and i definatly remember being the first to open the door...? This happens A LOT. the first few times, i didnt really mind but when it happens constantly with no explanation it just seems lazy on the developers part.
This leads me to my next gripe. At the start of the game, i loved the fact that this was like tombraider with more fighting, but all the bad guys are based on 3 or 4 different models and it begins to get really repetitive. you can figure out who has what gun just by looking at their clothes- someone shooting rockets at you? dont bother waiting for the smoke trail, just look for the dude in a red t shirt. It seems like someone figured out more bad guys=longer game and so thats what they did.
My final and biggest complaint is about the scenery. When you have to start climbing ledges etc a la Lara Croft, the path you need to take is really quite obvious. However, there is treasure dotted about the game for you to collect so i was trying to take alternative routes in an attempt to fins it. But, when you try to jump on a ledge or cliff edge which looks IDENTICAL to the one you can climb, drake jumps about 1 foot in the air and cant reach it. This is really really annoying, since when he is going the way the game wants you to go, he is capable of leaps that would rival Altair from Assassins Creed. This makes it all a bit too easy. At one stage, while i was running jumping and climbing i didnt even need to bother looking around since after each jump, or after shimmying along a ledge, the camera swung round so i didnt even need to move the left stick to point at the next jump-i literally just had to keep pointing left and pressing x when i reached the edge, even if each move was in a different direction.
Now, i know that after those complaints it might seem like i hated the game, but surprisingly i still really enjoyed it. Despite the flaws, the game is fun, the characters are likeable and the story is interesting.
So would i buy it? Put it this way- if a sequel were released and the only change was a new story and new location, with the same flaws, Id still buy it and im sure id like it. And if some of these flaws were addressed for the sequel, then it should be a five star game.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 12Jan2009 | | | great fun I sometimes like some puzzles in games with some action this does exactly that. Its better than Half life 2s portal that just got tedious jumping through those portals and getting vertigo from it.Uncharted however keeps you excited by adding enemys to keep you from getting bored. The action is great and even better you get awarded trophies for doing so. I really enjoyed Uncharted. at first i thought itll be a let down the graphics look cartoony comapared to Assassins creed brought Assassins creed first turns out this was better. buy it I recommend it.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 27Dec2008 | | | This game has good graphics but the game play is not brilliant. The puzzles are fairly easy, apart from one, and the trick to surviving is not difficult either. Some reviews say its repetivive or difficult to kill the pirates but if you approach correctly its a challenge and you can avoid being killed and re-starting. The good thing is you can complete the game on medium difficulty and there is good satisfaction from this. It easily leaves the door open for a follow up and there are simple ways to improve the overall game.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 11Nov2008 | | | I have always wanted this game since it came out and I got my hands on a pre-owned copy after trading in the appalling TNA Impact. I was very impressed with the opening cutscene and the first level was fantastic. It played like a modern version of Indiana Jones. The graphics are amazing, you really feel like you are in the middle of the jungle, in an ancient temple and a German U-Boat from World War 2. However, it was after this level that the game took a strange turn in to a shoot-em up.
The levels that follow are highly frustrating and basically require to shoot wave after wave of baddies from cover. The baddies require too many bullet hits before they die which only drags out the fighting to the point where it becomes frustrating and boring. I was really hoping for this to be an adventure in to history but it is basically just a shoot-em up with some treasure thrown in here and there. I hope they improve the sequel so that it focuses more on the Indiana Jones side of the game which was fun when you werent shooting at hundreds of baddies.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 14Oct2008 | | | After reading the revews and wachting the tralar i bought it.When i got it i opend it up and put it in my ps3.And wow what a game for starters the graphics are abousolutly butiful and stunning.the combat system is brillant you get to use all sorts of guns like shot guns machine guns etc and you also get to do realy cool moves like sneaking up on a guy and braking his neck or just punching them or doing a flying kick. The game also uses the sixaxes a fair bit and the story line is realy good and you get so hoked you cant put it down.An Amazing Game a MUST BUY FOr PS3 owners
