I first tried this game by downloading the demo from the playstation network, I found it quite a new viewpoint on how to play a first person shooter game and when I saw that the game was £7 on amazon I had to get it. This being an older game, it doesnt make full use of the PS3 capabilities but it is still an enjoyable game and the graphics are not buggy. The idea of a person being inhabited by a demon is a good premise to the game and the way it is performed in the game is fun. I wont go into any detail about the storyline as I hate it when people do spoilers! When you are travelling through the levels there is unfortunately no run option, so you have to walk everywhere and if confronted by baddies always be wary of where the nearest cover is. Your character will not be able to absorb a great deal of fire which some reviewers have found very annoying as it will mean you die quite a bit if you just go in guns blazing. You need to take your time, line up your guns and try for head shots to kill baddies outright. Another way to kill people is to use your powers, send forth your demon snake and you can sneak up on enemies and rip their faces off, then eat their hearts for good measure, and this also helps you progress on the way to gaining darkness powers. I found that from the onset it was easy to get turned around and lose your direction a bit when in the subway, but a funny side to this is that when you use the public phone you can dial in some random numbers and if you connect to someone it may be a funny answer phone message from a company advertising muscle formula to an alien adoration group. The phone is also used to complete the collectables you can find along the way. And you can find costumes for your demon spawn - it will make sense as you play! I am unfortunately giving this game a 4 star rating, it is a good game, there are just a few aspects that irked me and so brought it down some, as I mentioned about the lack of running option. If you go to an area and try to complete it you may find that you have to backtrack to unlock some of the story before you can complete that area. I did find that the character can die a bit too quickly, but then this is a good point as it makes the game that bit harder. The game is excellent value for money thought, and it is worth adding to your collection as it also has an online multiplayer option. I have not tried this to date, but it gives the game a bit more longetivity.

Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 10Apr2009 | | | You play Jackie Estacado, hitman for the Franchetti Mafia family and unwitting vessel of demonic, two head-sprouting entity `The Darkness`. Mafia capo Paulie wants you dead, so you mooch around New York trying to survive trough a combination of demon skills, summoning chattering hellspawn and good ol firepower. Everything (from the graphics to the involving and adult story) screams pure class. The darklings you summon out of tentacle-spouting portals wield a winning mix of chaingun, brute force and suicide odance. And its all played in a beautiful and believable NYC. But for the first third of the game most of your time and ammo is taken up tediously shooting out lights so your powers can be unleashed, but that aside, this is truly a great game.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 20Mar2009 | | | I have recently bought this game having heard of The Darkness Comics and loving the storylines and artwork, also the price was cheap and I have read alot of the reviews from other users. Here is my feedback.
This is an 18 for a reason, its full of really really bad language & violence, both fun gory stuff & disturbing stuff (like commiting suicide so your character can go to hell).
So you have probably heard that you are possessed by a demon & are fighting the mafia, and that the graphics are great & the storyline is great... so I wont repeat this, instead I will correct some of negative comments made by others.
`lack of regular people`.... its night time, so not that many people would be on the streets, whilst the subway stations are really busy and give you fun mini missions.
`Jackie is weak, blah blah blah`.... Exactly how many people do you know who can take serval bullets from serval ruthless gansters at one time without dying? I would say its realistic
`You cant shoot straight`.... I dont even understand this comment, but Ive had no problem. You carry 2 guns and shoot each weapon independently with the R1 & L1 buttons. Both guns use one aiming device (a red spot, like in sniper sequences) and playing on medium difficultly if you get close to an enemies head or a light, it auto corrects the aim and locks onto the target.
`You have to shoot lights & its boring`... This is great fun, it adds a thrilling element to the game, as you shoot out lights, it serves 2 purposes, 1) the levels get darker & darker, giving you stronger power & 2) it gives your location away to your enemy so they actually come after you, and as said above, Jackie is a normal weak human so it keeps you on the edge of your seat.
`Jackie only has one speed, slow`... I think people are missing the point, this is not a run around blasting everything type of game, this is not a keep your finger on the uzi trigger type of game, this is an ultra violent, unfolding story, stay in the shadows type of game. If you want speed, use your demon arm (which is like a second character, and is fully controllable) which you can use at any time to speed across any surface, the floor, ceiling and walls to attack enemies and devour their hearts.
`There is no map`... Do you need a map to get around your local area? I dont carry a map to get around my local city, and this is a realistic game. I think this game really benefits from having no level map, you find you have to look for street signs or take subway trains to destinations, and find your way around the city. And it gives it a very claustrophobic atmosphere.
Of all the comments, the only thing I would agree with is the loading times, they arent all that long (a few seconds), but there is a loading `video sequence` every time you die and restart from a checkpoint, which if you die alot gets a little tiresome. The developers have tried to make even this as interesting as possible by changing the cutscenes to remind you of the plot point you have reached.
Ive played Quake, Doom, Duke Nukem, and the original Wolf3D, Timesplitters, and so many classics but The Darkness, truely is the most involved, addictive 1st person Ive ever played and with a great story, dark atmosphere, beautiful gritty graphics, excellent dialogue, original gameplay and price, Id say a must for anybody over the age of 18.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 06Jan2009 | | | Please bear in mind that it is over a year since I last played The Darkness but what I can remember is how much I really enjoyed this game!
It had a great storyline, great dialogue, brilliant characters and solid gameplay. The graphics are fully what youd expect in a next-gen game, although not the best, they are definitely nowhere near the worst. Overall in my own opinion, this game is possibly better than a lot of games released today. I must have played about 30 games since The Darkness was released and I can confidently claim that this game sits neatly in my top 10, alongside the CODs, LBP & FIFA09, Drakes Fortune and a few others, so as you can see, I like a whole variety of games. If a game is good, then I will like it, be it a FPS, RPG, Platformer or whatever.
So all in all I really liked The Darkness. It has some flaws here & there but in all honesty, what game doesnt.
Oh, I nearly forgot; I would love a Darkling as a pet! They are EXCELLENT!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 29Dec2008 | | | Decent FPS with good graphics & story, though it is over far too quickly, with not a lot in it to bring you back in for more. To be honest, I was quite relieved when I completed it, as I wouldnt have to watch another one of those annoying cutscenes.
And multiplayer? Well, let me just say that it wasnt enough to keep me from selling this on.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 07Oct2008 | | | If you like films such as underworld or the crow, and music such as tool or a perfect circle, thisl be worth the money.
Its a revenge story, with a twist, zombie like undead, renegade cops, the mafia and a huge shot of darkness follwed by demonic powers: admitted to you against your will.
Bought with low expectations, certainly delivered more than what was advertised. So far great story, wonderfull effects, oh and plug into a stereo if you can and the atmosphere will be stunning.
worth it
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 05Sep2008 | | | I wasnt sure about buying this, the blurb didnt seem all that interesting, just another `horror` game so i put off buying it, but then saw it in gamestation for a tenner so took a chance on it and... what a game!
This game is just such fun to play and the storyline is great too, the little side-missions you find yourself doing in the subway are fun to pass time too, such as where you have to pick up the coins from the tracks before a train hits you just to win the bet with the little old lady that you can actually do it! (that itself took me about 20 attempts...)
Its been criminally underestimated in my opinion, the game is a pleasant suprise, it was only the 3rd game i bought on my PS3 and was only a tenner, so i didnt expect much, previousely id even decided against buying it because the description on the box didnt really do anything for me. But i decided to take a chance on it and it blew me away, the gameplay is great, switching between present-day and then to a hellish underworld, the controls are easy to get used to, the storyline is pretty good too, which seems to be a rarity these days, the ending is pretty sad too, just leaves you wanting more, and apparently a sequel is planned which is great news.
