Portable MP3 Buyers Guide

When buying a portable mp3 player, you need to consider the type of music files you will want to listen to on it. The type of music file largely depends on where you sourced the file. Thankfully buying and playing audio files is not quite as complicated as it once was. However, you should not be under the illusion that every music file will play on every type of portable mp3 player.

If you have existing digital music on your computer you should check what type of files they are (for example mp3, AAC, WMA, OGG) and then make sure the portable mp3 player you buy is capable of playing that type of file (the specifications of the player will state this). If you have your music collection on CDs, then you will have to rip these CDs onto your computer as music files, which you can then transfer to your portable mp3 player. When you buy your portable mp3 player there will often be software included to do this ripping process. If not then there are plenty of programmes available online that will do this for you. You will be able to choose which audio format to use, so you can definitely pick one that your player supports. If you want the greatest flexibility then you should just rip your music as standard mp3 files.

When buying music from online stores, although it saves you the hassle of ripping your music, it can be harder to ensure compatibility with your mp3 player. Recently the success of online retailers such as Amazon has started a trend towards the sale of universally compatible mp3 files. However, one of the major stores, Apple iTunes, sells its music in AAC format, some of which is protected and some of which isn't. The difference between protected and unprotected music files is important. For example, ripping a CD onto your computer using Windows Media Player will create unprotected WMA. However, protected WMA files are sold online, so you may find that unprotected WMA files play on your mp3 player, whereas protected WMA files do not. The situation is similar with AAC files, with some being sold unprotected and some protected. Unprotected files are often referred to as DRM-free. Carefully check the specification of any player you consider buying if you are intending to purchase protected files.
