Projector Lamps Buyers Guide

Video projectors are an expensive purchase, but they can provide great entertainment. However, the frustration when the projector lamp expires can be considerable, particularly as projector lamps themselves can be quite expensive. An additional problem may sometimes be that replacement of the lamp can be a tricky procedure.

Projector lamps are rated as lasting a certain number of hours depending on the projector. When you first buy your projector you should look for the lifespan of the projector lamp associated and buy one with as much life as possible. Furthermore, you should look at the cost of replacement lamps for each projector, to check that you will be able to afford to replace them. When buying replacement projector lamps you MUST buy the correct lamp for your make and model of projector. You cannot simply replace your lamp with a lamp from another projector to save money. However, for some projectors there are third-party lamps designed specifically for that projector. If they are available for your projector then you can buy these projector lamps instead of the original manufacturer's offerings. However, you should bear in mind that doing so may well void the warranty of the projector, so you will have to weigh up whether you think the saving is worth that risk. If third-party lamps are not available for your projector, then you will have no choice but to buy an original manufacturer replacement and the only way to get a bargain will be by some serious price comparison.

When buying projector lamps you should also note that there is a difference between projector lamps and projector bulbs. The projector lamp includes the bulb as well as the housing of the bulb, to aid easy replacement of the whole module. If you buy a projector bulb only then you will need to take the housing away from your old bulb and attach it to the new bulb. If you have the technical skills to do this then it can save you some money. However, if you are not sure about doing this, then you should make sure you buy a replacement projector lamp (with housing) rather than just a replacement bulb, as it is not always a simple task to take apart the housing and rebuild it around the new bulb.
