Radiator Covers Buyers Guide
Some people choose radiator covers simply to cover the radiator and thus shield and protect young children or animals from the heating system. Others choose them for cosmetic reasons.
Regardless as to the reason for using them, well chosen radiator covers can help reduce energy costs of energy. Covers now come in a huge range of sizes and styles, with something suitable for just about every home and every price range. You can find hand crafted covers, mass produced radiator covers and bespoke covers. Clearly bespoke offerings come at a premium price. For some, a workable compromise can be radiator cover kits which allow you to choose, for example, the overall frame style and then select the type, pattern and colour of the grille separately.
In all cases, it is important that you pick a cover that matches and complements the aesthetics of your room. In general terms, radiator covers that are simple and elegant are more likely to stand the test of time than those "of the moment". If saving on energy costs is very important to you, it is important to remember that some radiator covers do the job better than others. For example, wire mesh fronted covers are particularly good for energy efficiency, allowing as much of the heat to pass through as possible.
It is also vital to make sure your cover meets health and safety requirements, particularly for radiators that are placed in places such as schools, nurseries or anywhere where children are likely to be found. It is also particularly important for the elderly.
You will need to take accurate measurements before selecting a particular cover. Most radiator covers have an internal height of around 882mm and externally a height of some 900mm. These would allow for a maximum radiator height of around 860mm when you measure from the floor. Average internal depths are in the region of 155-160mm, with the corresponding external depth being around 185-195mm if, as with many models, the cover includes a shelf which overhangs at the top. This allows for a maximum radiator depth (when measured to the wall) of around 150mm. Clearly there are many cabinets that exceed or are well below these dimensions so you should have little difficulty in finding the right model. Widths vary enormously. Remember when measuring the width to include any pipe work plus allow for around 50mm internal clearance from the radiator.
