Radiator Valves Buyers Guide
When you are looking at the long term cost of your heating equipment you should consider the cost of replacement of parts. Radiator Valves come n many different forms, suitable for different radiators and are made by a number of different manufacturers. It is important to make sure you get the right valve for your radiator and your home. Some radiator valves have special features that are intended to increase their efficiency, making them a more desired option. The most commonly used material for radiator valves is brass. This is a good option however it does require a great deal of cleaning. Therefore, you may prefer to purchase a chrome, metal plated, nickel or even a gold plated radiator valve.
The main distinctions between radiators valves are whether they are traditional or thermostatically controlled. Traditional valves are manual, you open and close the valve depending on whether you need the heat level in the room to go up or down. You can also find thermostatically controlled valves. These have a heat sensor built inside which can be adjusted to the desired temperature. The valve adjusts itself to ensure it maintains the temperature set by you. These valves are generally a very good option however they are not suitable for ever radiator type and you should check compatibility.
Another key factor to consider is the bore of your pipes. There are in fact a bewildering range of pipe bores in use in today's central heating systems, ranging from around 8mm all the way to 28mm with many different sizes in between. Clearly you will need to purchase valves that are designed for your particular pipe bore although in some cases you may be able to use fittings that locally reduce or increase the bore. In all cases it is best to consult with an experienced plumber or heating engineer to ensure compatibility.
Since valves are so visible, the range of styles and finishes on offer has improved considerably over the last few years. It is even possible to buy replacement valve knobs or caps to improve the appearance of existing radiator valves.
