Router Tables Buyers Guide
Router Tables work by allowing the user to fix a router to the underneath of a table. Instead of moving the router over the work, you simply move the work over the router. A guide fence allows the work to be moved along the table, whilst at the same time extracting cuttings and dust via an opening at the back of the table.
Some woodworkers prefer to make their own router table however there are a range of options available made by some of the top manufacturers, such as Makita, Wolfcraft and Dremel. Options include bench top router tables, or there are stand alone versions. Bench top router tables mean that less space is required and allow for easy storage. They do, however, require that you have a solid, stable surface on which to use them for safety reasons and of course for accuracy.
Router tables are generally made from aluminium, although some budget models are made from MDF. Any table should be constructed in a way that is resistant to friction and must of course be flat. When considering a router table, ensure that both the table and the legs are of solid construction. Any movement will not only potentially affect the accuracy with which you can perform routing tasks but could well compromise your safety. The same criteria apply to the guide fence. The router table should also provide easy access to the router itself so that bits can be easily replaced during use.
It is also important that you understand the safety features of the table and how they should be used. A router table can be one of the most versatile and indispensable pieces of equipment in the workshop, but as with any other piece of woodworking equipment, safety should be a number one priority.
