Routers & Planers Buyers Guide

One of the essentials for any woodworker is having the right equipment for the job. Routers & Planers have been around since ancient times and although powered tools have been become increasingly popular over the years, for many people the original manual Routers & Planers are still the preferred option and can sometimes produce better results.

A woodworking plane is used to remove shavings of wood to reduce the thickness of the wood and to smooth over rough edges in producing a high quality finish. There are as many different planers as there are jobs to use them for and planes have been developed for specific purposes. Bench planes have been developed which are adjustable for the type of work required, whereas Block Planes have been designed to be used in one hand to finish the end of a piece of wood. Jointer planes are used to shape edges to allow the carpenter to fit the pieces together more accurately. There are also chamfer planes for bevel edges and circular planes which are used on concave and convex surfaces. Modern powered planes can make the job of planning less laborious, but this is sometimes at the expense of the quality of the finish and many woodworkers still feel that a manual plane allows greater control over each individual cut.

Routers are used to hollow to a piece of wood and have been popular with staircase and pattern makers for generations. Although some people still prefer the manual router, since the early 1960s, the most popular from has been the powered spindle router. The router has a blade which projects below the bottom of the tool. The blade can be changed to suit the application, as required. Many woodworkers consider the router to be the most versatile of tools and they are often used to produce mouldings and edge decoration as well as recessing lock plates and door hinges.

Modern Routers & Planers have a range of features and care should be taken to ensure that the tools that you choose are suitable for the job. If possible, try the piece of equipment before buying or look for recommendations. You should hold the item to make sure it is well balanced and that you will find it easy to use over a period of time. Routers & Planers come in many forms and taking the trouble to do small amount of research should ensure you end up with precisely the right model.
