My husband bought this panini maker from a department store and gave it to me for my birthday. The paninis it makes are great, but just as we were getting into the panini habit (used it 5 times), the toaster decided to overheat and then stop working. The department store gave us a replacement which did exactly the same thing the very first time we used it. The store had no further stock so we bought this one from Amazon because we really like the clip together facility for the heat plates which means you can store it standing up and so save worktop space, and we are hoping it will be third time lucky. So far we have used this one 3 times, so its done better than the last one......
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 28Jun2009 | | | I got this sandwich toaster from amazon a couple of weeks ago, and its hardly been off since! Ive been without a cooker for a while, and I wish Id bought this sandwich maker sooner - it does everything.
Weve grilled chicken fillets, all kinds of vegetables, sausages (ah, should try burgers!), halloumi cheese, in fact someone tried onion bhajis in it last night...thank god the cooker arrives on Saturday!.
Toasted sandwiches are good, as are paninis.
Definitely a good buy!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 08May2009 | | | as the other reviews say, a great sturdy grill, could be used for almost anything, heats up quick, nothing like a hot toasty on a cold day.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 26Apr2009 | | | Kenwood SM606 Sandwich Maker - this has to be one of the best toastie makers ever, its ideal for bread, paninis, wraps, theres no guessing about how hot it is, as it tells you when its ready, my teenage sons all agree that this is the best piece of kitchen equipment we have
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 16Mar2009 | | | this sandwhich maker lived up to our expectations, easy to use, easy to store and even better easy to clean, makes all kind of sandwiches quickly approx 6 minutes for our requirements, after trying other models this one is definetly the best in our opinion.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 25Feb2009 | | | Well may be not the last word, but its difficult to see what more you might need from a sandwich toaster.
I used to have one of those Breville toasters, designed for bread half the size of the current standard loaf slice, which either sealed the toastie round the edges or squeezed all the stuffing out. Didnt use it very much because it was to messy an difficult to clean.
This Kenwood one is so straight forward and easy to clean we are now regular toastiers.
I have not tried grilling anything on it or perhaps not tested it to its fullest range of capabilities, but i only want it for a toasted sandwich so for that its great.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 04Feb2009 | | | I bought this for my parents for Christmas. Their only criteria was that it must be easy to clean cheese off... I read lots of reviews before deciding to go with this one rather than a traditional Breville. They love this sandwich maker and now use it every day, it ticks all the boxes, is easy to clean, to store and very easy to use. My dad now insists on everything going in the Panini press (including the turkey and stuffing leftovers! - very very good product.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 30Jan2009 | | | Posh sandwiches! Ive used all sorts of bread -From very thick Ciabatta to very thin pitta -all fantastic. Takes very little time to heat up. A few minutes to cook. If you mke a mess with the cheese DONT WORRY!! as soon as it cools it just easily wipes off! Unfortunately the plug doesnt stow away easily BUT the sandwiches ARE great!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 18Jul2008 | | | I bought my parents a Kenwood SM606 as a replacement for their old sandwich toaster (you know, the kind everyone bought in the 70s and 80s) when it died on them after many years of service. The problem with the old one was that, whilst the sandwiches it made were really tasty, its shape meant it could only take ordinary sliced bread and it wasnt the easiest kitchen contraption to clean. The SM606 does equally good toasties but tops the old one by being able to make paninis, Italian sandwiches and loads of other bread-related sweet and savoury snacks - in fact almost any type of bread can be used, including baguettes, ciabatta and focaccia.
It isnt the most elaborate or complicated thing to use, you simply switch it on, wait for it to heat up and then pop in your chosen snack. It heats up fairly rapidly and grills sandwiches in five minutes or so, with the end result always tasting good. The grilling plates are shaped very similarly to those on a certain Lean Mean Grilling Machine (you know, the kind everyone bought in the 90s) so that excess butter is allowed to run out leaving the sandwiches crisper; a lip around the lower plate edge ensures that any excess doesnt spill out over the worktop. The shape of the plates also makes cleaning much easier - just wipe over them with a damp cloth after use.
The SM606 is a pretty big and heavy item but it does feel sturdy and it can always be stored upright if room is at a premium, although keeping it secreted away does seem a bit of a waste given its really classy chrome finish. This finish also makes cleaning the exterior much less of a chore, again you just wipe over it with a damp cloth.
I cant promise that if you buy this itll be anything other than a use a couple of times and then never use again item, but it really is so simple to use and maintain that Im pretty sure itd get quite a lot of use. If you have a hankering for toasted snacks then this is probably as good, quick and easy a way to make them as you can get.
