Good Points
Nice looking phone. Excellent pixels on camera and good sound for playing music. Great sized screen and graphics. Bad Points
Feels flimsy. Keys quite small. Keeps freezing on me!! General Comments
I moved to a Nokia 3 years ago, when my Sony Ericsson let me down so badly I wanted to change. I had a 6230i. It was awesome, reliable and NEVER let me down and I kept it for 3 years! Then I decided to move service provider so I had the chance to choose a new phone. Comparing the models and what contract I could afford to pay, I thought the specifications of the Nokia 6500 Slide made it look a very good phone with great features. Now, I am a simple person - I like a phone to use for making calls and texting, taking photos and videos. I never use it for MP3 music or emailing, so I cannot comment on these features.
And now for the review. It feels a nice phone to hold. Solid without being clumpy. Nice colour - brushed silver and black. Nice large screen that shows GREAT colour and detail. When sliding, it unlocks/locks which is helpful. Keys are pretty small. Im female so have medium hands - I think it would be difficult for people with large fingers to use precisely. The button on the side which is the button for taking photos, is located where you hold the phone to text/use. Any pressure on this button (which is ALWAYS for me), it stops the keys from working, resulting in incorrect spellings/number dialling! Another downside? The camera. I KNOW Ive said it was good, but that is only because the 3m pixels do create a good photo. The downside is that it works best in daylight. In low light, if using the flash it totally overexposes the subject. Dont use it and you have a dull, orangey picture. It does adjust the brightness for you, and looking at the screen you think its going to turn out okay - but the resulting picture is SO different! I just think practice is needed to get used to using it with good effect. The videoing is better, as the phone alters brightness quickly and effectively. Good sound from the video too. I have downloaded games onto it, and as before, the QUALITY of the screen is brilliant, especially as the screen is generous in size, but again, the small keys can make playing the games sometimes difficult. I HAVE put one song on it and it plays back very well, no hissing from the speakers, so would assume people who want to use it as an MP3 player would not be disappointed. Typical Nokia, SO easy to text and phone, and simple filing system for music/themes/photos etc, that Nokia fans will know and love. My two final downsides... the back seems to come off too easily. Opposite to my previous phone which needed a chisel and hammer to remove, the back on this one it is pretty easy to knock off. Maybe thats just my phone. The slide feature is starting to make my phone feel a little fragile - it wiggles from side to side as though its working loose, and after only 3 months of use, I fear it may not last a couple of years like my others. When texting with slide open, the power sometimes flashes off and on very quickly, indicating the wiring may be fragile. And a HUGE annoyance that has only started recently is that the phone just freezes up. This usually happens when an alarm/reminder goes off and you cant do anything but take the battery out. Annoying but also alarming as it was perfect during the first 3 months. Also, my `DR WHO` ringtone I downloaded keeps reverting to the Nokia ringtone, and any screensaver Ive got gets replaced with the standard plain one.... They are still on your phone in their respective folders, but somehow the settings seem to reset on their own. VERY annoying! Im just waiting for other things to go wrong with it. Great all-rounder phone, but small niggles that seem to be growing with time!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 18Apr2009 | | | Had this phone for just over a week now. Received it from Play minus the battery (kinda needed that bit) a courier was sent to pick it up and the replacement in less than a week, spot on! Anyway about the phone, from its 3.2 megapixel camera to its rock solid slide action (samsung take note) this will not disappoint, all this and a 16 million colour screen thrown in as well. Nokia has been in the mobile phone game for a long long time and you can see why!!!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 21Jan2009 | | | To look at, this is a great phone. Its very stylish - especially in the brushed metal version - and feels good in the hand. It has a good weight about it that the N95 doesnt. It feels solid and expensive and the sliding action is very good.
The faults, however, are well known. The occassional freezes are a pain, and the camera is poor in low light conditions. The last firmware update I did lost some applications I had bought for it and changed the style of the clock, without the ability to change it back.
This is almost a great phone. Improvements to the stability and the camera would turn it into definitely a great phone.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 15Jan2009 | | | Ive had this phone 3 days and I think its fantastic.
Casing: I like the look of the brushed steel and really makes the phone look sturdy and pretty robust.
Slider mechanism: Very solid and slides very well. Theres a bit of movement at the bottom of the phone but thats because I dropped it.
Camera: Its pretty good, not as clear and sharp as the N73 but still pretty clear.
Keypad: When I first used it it was a little creaky but the top set of buttons (where the D-pad is) is really clear and laid out perfectly. The bottom number keypad is a little stiff but pretty responsive. The keys do not merge together and are not too small (I have large fingers and thumbs) which makes it perfect for texting.
Battery life: This is the only thing that lets the phone down, but these days the batteries dont last that long anyway. The battery life is really poor if youre using the phone a lot (lasted about 8 hours using MSN Messenger a couple of times - Im on 3). Although if youre not using the phone much its not too bad. Ive sent quite a few texts today and the batterys still full. Be careful with the charger pin, however, as its really fragile. Ive bent it already! I tripped over the cable so the phone fell on the floor, luckily it fell on carpet.
Screen: Really bright and clear. Not a lot I can say about the screen apart from that. I might get a protective film for it because I dont want to scratch it.
Overall: This is a really good phone and does what I want it to do, however the battery life is not so good - youll probably have to charge it every day or two.

Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 01Dec2008 | | | I spent days looking for a phone that looked good, had a good camera, and was under 250 quid. I decided on the 6500 slide, and after a good 1st month have now decided it was a terrible decision. It tends to randomly freeze, sometimes it just forgets all my contacts, and at other times it becomes impossible to unlock the keypad lock. Apart from this drastic issue, i wasnt best pleased with the camera. Although not bad in daylight, during nightime even in artificial light it seems to morph into an absolutely useless snapper. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone...
