Single Use Cameras Buyers Guide
Single use cameras are ideal for taking on short trips as they offer a cheap and convenient way of capturing life's special moments. Furthermore, with single use or disposable cameras, there is less reason to worry when taking them into difficult terrain. As an example, these cameras are ideal for those climbing mountains or on a surfing holiday as they can be left out in the sun, knocked over, kicked and scraped without the worry of damaging an expensive piece of equipment. Indeed, single use cameras are, for many, the cheap alternative to "rugged" cutting-edge professional equipment. However, do bear in mind that the film inside them may be easily damaged beyond repair if they are mistreated so you may still lose your photos.
If you are considering disposable cameras, there are some important points to note. First, the price of single use cameras must be low enough to justify buying them. In this respect, anything between £1 and £10 is a reasonable guideline with most tending to be in the region of £5 or less. This is particularly important when you consider that a relatively good digital camera can now be purchased for around £50. When considering price, look at the cost of development. Many disposable cameras now have this included in the purchase price which significantly improves overall cost.
The single use camera is designed with convenience in mind, so expect a limited range of functions. One key point to consider is whether or not you are likely to be taking night photos in which case you will require a flash. Clearly the flash requires additional battery power and manufacturing cost: better to go for a non-flash model unless you really need it. Do bear in mind that since single use cameras use traditional film technology, there is no digital interface and thus no way of editing or enhancing the picture or deleting it and taking a new one.
The camera must also be able to take a reasonable range of pictures. The same rules apply here as with any traditional photography exercise: film speed and ASA rating will affect the quality of the photos under certain conditions. Whilst a 200 ASA film is fine for general conditions, 400 ASA may be better for lower light levels. Finally, the disposable camera is an excellent product to get young children interested in photography. Kids will spend hours of fun snapping shots of themselves -- and just about everything else.
