Skype Phones Buyers Guide

Although the Skype VoIP service has been available for a few years now, it has largely been used to make calls using a computer and headset. This has meant that people have been able to make phone calls that would be very expensive using ordinary landlines or mobiles (such as international calls) for very little, or even for free (as all Skype to Skype calls are free). However, the downside of this arrangement was always that your computer had to be operational for you to receive and make phone calls. Now special Skype phones are becoming popular. These remove the need for the computer and give you an experience similar to that of a standard portable home phone.

Skype phones will always require an internet connection to work. However, you can use a wireless internet connection so you don't need to be physically plugged into your router to make a phone call. Many Skype phones will come with a special wireless transmitter and receiver that plugs into your router via an Ethernet connection and then provides you with a true home portable phone experience, but using Skype phones. If you do not want to lose your traditional landline, then you should look for a kit that has a socket for your landline. You can then use the Skype phone to make standard landline calls as well as Skype calls, meaning you only need one handset to make phone calls. Of course, you can purchase further handsets for other rooms in the house.

Once you have logged into your Skype account using your new Skype phone it is just like using an ordinary phone. You can browse your contacts and select which one you want to phone. You can send text messages using the keypad. The main advantage of Skype phones will always be the cheap rates though. The only disadvantages of them are that the quality of the phone call will be dependent on your broadband connection and that of the person you are calling. Thus, it may be poorer in periods of heavy broadband use. You also need to have your broadband connection and router permanently on, which increases your energy use somewhat and can leave you without a working phone in an emergency situation (although most people will have mobiles so this is unlikely to be a serious problem).
