Speaker Cables Buyers Guide

The whole issue of whether using different speaker cables makes any difference to the sound can be a contentious one. The idea of one cable being better than another can seem rather strange to some people. With the cost of high end systems, the idea of spending a further significant sum on speaker cables can be less than appealing. However, there is considerable evidence that shows that a good set of speaker cables can make a significant difference to the listening experience. Given the size and value of the speaker cable market, there is clearly something to be said for a decent set of cables.

The best way in which to decide how much you should spend on speaker cables is to go into a good hi-fi shop and ask to listen to different cables on the same sound system - ideally a system with the same components as your current or planned system.

There are two main areas in which speaker cables are supposed to affect performance: tonal balance and detailed resolution. Improved detailed resolution is probably the most important benefit as this is really what having a high fidelity system is all about. Not only does it improve your ability to hear every subtle nuance of the music, but the cleaner quality of the sound leads to a more pleasant listening experience. The effect on the tonal balance is that a better set of cables should give you an extended bass and perhaps a sweeter treble.

It is more important to judge what you hear when you use the cable, rather than anything that the manufacturer or salesperson may claim, particularly as different cables can have different effects on different systems. The same is true of the claims surrounding various cable technologies, whether the number of strands, type of material, level of oxygenation in the conductor and so forth. Make sure that you balance your choice of cable to the system. There is absolutely no benefit to be had from spending thousands (very easy to do with speaker cable) to connect the speakers to a £500 system.

The good news is that most high end cable is sold by length and you should always keep the length to the minimum necessary in obtaining the best possible sound so you will not be spending more than you need. Also, when auditioning speaker cables try not to make any judgements based on how they look as this will rarely have any direct correlation with how they sound. Cables that seem fat enough to power an entire town do not necessarily give better bass, for example. Indeed some of the latest technologies are remarkably slim.
