Steamers are a really simple way of preparing complete meals without the need to add oils (and thereby calories) and they help to preserve more of the natural flavour and goodness of your food. They are essentially a self-contained unit with a heating element that boils water to create steam to cook the food. They are available in one, two or three tier versions allowing you to cook different foods (such as fish, vegetables, rice etc) all at the same time. They are designed to allow steam to rise through and around the slotted baskets/bowls to cook the food.
Sizes This is usually given in litres. It will be the maximum capacity of the baskets or bowls. Steamers range in size from about 0.5 litres – 1.5 litres. The smallest size is really only suitable for one portion meals.
Power On electric steamers is measured in watts and ranges from about 450 – 750 watts. The higher wattage steamers (which can be a slightly more expensive) will heat up more quickly and produce more steam thereby cooking the food faster. There are also hob-top versions available that can be used in the same way as a large saucepan.
Extra Features
- Timers - Most electric models will have these to let you pre- set the cooking time (usually up to 60 minutes). They will then automatically turn off when the time has elapsed.
- Rice Bowl - These are available on almost all multi-purpose steamers. They are a non-slatted bowl for steaming rice. Some steamers are called “rice cookers” and only have this type of bowl. However, it may not be worthwhile buying this type when you can have a model with slotted baskets as well that is suitable for a wide variety of foods.
- Keep Warm Option - This is a really low setting on electric steamers allowing you to keep the food just warm enough but without over cooking it. Some, but not all, models will have this useful feature.
GENERAL
Steamers can be very versatile allowing you to cook several different foods at once in a way that helps to retain more of the vitamins and flavour of the food. They all basically perform the same function so it’s really down to size and aesthetics as to which you choose. When looking for yours, choose one that is large enough for your needs but is not going to give you storage problems. Look, also, at whether all the parts are dishwasher safe to save time on washing up, and if it comes with a recipe book which (especially for a beginner) can be very welcome.
