I know song writers come across their inspiration; lyrics and riffs in all sorts of strange ways; but when Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan wrote the beginnings of Highway Star back in the early 70s; by their own admission it was gobbledegook with Gillans andom words sung over Blackmoores simple riff. Not the most auspicious start to one of the most iconic songs by one of rocks most iconic bands. Its themes make it an obvious contender for the ultimate driving song; but it is so much greater
