Torches Buyers Guide

Although relatively inexpensive, torches are invaluable items of equipment for the home. Often kept by the side of the bed or, for those less well prepared, hidden away in a darkened cupboard underneath a mountain of junk, torches come into their own when the lights go off unexpectedly or noises are heard in the middle of the night. In fact, torches are useful in a number of other situations and can provide more than just a shining light in the darkness.

Traditionally, many torches were overly large, cumbersome contraptions that took pride of place in the DIY cabinet or the car boot. Whilst larger torches can create powerful beams of light for a while, their less than portable nature means that they often end up hidden and unused. Nowadays, if you want a big and powerful torch, there is no need to buy one that is the size and weight of a small dog. Today's high intensity flashlights usually comprise a long and slender case in which the batteries are housed, whilst the head of the torch is typically larger in creating a decent focused beam of light. A torch that is designed in this way should be suitable for general use in the home.

Power requires weight, both in terms of the torch body and the batteries. Whilst a 5 million candlepower torch can be useful for scanning the garden or playing searchlights with the clouds, most practical uses require only a lightweight offering. Modern halogen and, increasingly, LED light technology is allowing for far greater light output and reduced power consumption. Many household requirements can now be handled by LED torches.

Rechargeable torches include NiCad or in the case of larger models, lead acid batteries so that the torch can be charged from the mains. Whilst long term running costs are lower, with fewer batteries being required, it is not necessarily best to go for the cheapest models as you will find that the number of charge / re-charge cycles will be lower and the torch will let you down at the worst possible moment. Much the same can be said for wind-up torches. These are almost invariably LED and use a tiny dynamo to allow the user to recharge their internal batteries via a winding handle. Make sure that the quality is good and look for user reviews to confirm that the torch will work well over a sensible number of charge / re-charge cycles, perhaps around 300 to 500 at a minimum.

Although the majority of torches are portable in a strict sense, only ultralight torches can be easily carried around. The smallest are perfect, for example, for attaching to a set of car or house keys. Despite their diminutive size, keyring flashlights can provide enough light to read in the dark or to scan the floor for important objects.
