Edward Craven-Walker was inspired to invent the Lava Lamp after seeing an egg timer with a blob of liquid that rose to indicate the egg was ready. After years of perfecting his design the Lava Lamp (or Astro Lamp as it was then known) went on sale in 1963. It was soon exported all over the world and became one of the most recognisable icons of the period.
