Traditional Radiators Buyers Guide

Traditional radiators are popular amongst those looking for a classic finish to their room. Picked well they can be a real asset, creating a quality look and bringing plenty of atmosphere to your home. They are also likely to stand the test of time and work particularly well in period properties. However, there are things to look out for when purchasing a traditional radiator.

Cast Iron radiators are a good option as they provide a traditional look. Cast Iron was one of the first materials used for radiators and so gives an old fashioned charm. They gently heat the room and distribute heat evenly, ideal for a family home. They are also able to provide a lasting heating effect and come in multiple sizes so are suitable for almost any home. Cast Iron radiators can be left as they are or chromed to give a sophisticated and shiny look.

You can also find traditional radiators made from steel. These are ideal if you are looking for a more contemporary radiator with a traditional edge. If you choose this option ensure you have high grade quality soft steel, tubular steel or stainless steel for durability.

Styles range enormously from the heavy piped versions many of us remember from our school days through to more intricate and ornate styles reminiscent of a manor house or perhaps a Victorian gentleman's residence.

As with any radiator, you will need to check its heat output and of course the fittings. Many modern houses use micro bore pipes for central heating systems which may or may not be suitable. The sheer scale of some traditional radiators means that the flow requirements are significant. Some may even require specialist fittings or connections and may not work particularly well with modern thermostatic radiator valves so it is important that you check compatibility with your existing system.

One final consideration is that of weight. Modern steel radiators are relatively light in comparison with radiators fabricated using more traditional materials or methods. With so many homes now using stud and plasterboard walls, do make sure that if the radiator is to be wall mounted that the wall will in fact take the weight.
