Bought one of these from Amazon a couple of months ago as a second TV for general viewing and PS3ing about. Cant complain about the service, which was excellent. The tv was a replacement for a faulty Samsung T240HD, and the exchange was made quickly and with a minimum of fuss. But as for the quality of the product itself...
Having free-view, dvd and tv screen all in one box is certainly a big plus. The less wires dangling about the better as far as Im concerned. But thats really where the good news ends. While I havent experienced any of the technical difficulties that some of the previous reviewers have mentioned, I find it very difficult to agree with all the positive comments on picture quality.
My other tv is an aging second hand ASDA CRT, and were talking basic unknown-brand stuff here; without a flat screen or 100Hz technology or anything like that. When I unboxed the Toshiba and set it up in the same room as the CRT, I was struck immediately by two things: the picture is disappointingly dull in comparison - not really what I expected from a modern LCD. Maxing out the brightness and backlight doesnt improve things. In fact, all that does is really draw attention to the backlight bleeding round the edges and the clouding in the middle! Secondly, the picture is awash with artefacts from poor upscaling - especially so when watching DVDs of older TV material. The first problem is insurmountable, although I suppose you could learn to live with it - Ive had to :) While the second can be solved by sitting further away from the tv, this leads to the ridiculous scenario of having to view a 22` screen from at least 10 before you stop noticing all the fuzz on the screen. By so doing, however, it gets really difficult to make out fine detail / read text etc. I imagine that this is partly because the screen has a resolution of 1680*1050 - and therefore more scope to fail at upscaling than mere HD ready displays. So why the extra pixels? I can only imagine this is because they are rolled off the same production lines as the current PC monitors. But what works for PCs doesnt always work for TVs. If the extra pixels make the image WORSE, its certainly not a case of getting more value for money. If Id known this, I would have been tempted to pay less for a smaller TV with a lower resolution - and sit closer to it!
As a point of interest, this TV also has an old-school analogue tuner. Now, analogue has its problems - with the best images usually afflicted by at least a little bit of snow - but I did notice that where I did get a strong signal, snow aside, the PQ with analogue was BETTER than the corresponding free-view channel!!! Much less artefacting and other noise. Unfortunately, it seems that this TV can only be tuned to one standard at a time, ie. if you tune to freeview, all the analogue channels get wiped and vice versa. Its a real shame you cant have a mixture of the two.
PS3 use via HDMI, btw, is OK - not as good as the Samsung T240HD, not really in the same league - but thats another story.
The sound isnt much better. If there is very little ambient noise in the room, you shouldnt have any real problems - even although you have to sit so far away to enjoy watching it. Trouble is, as soon as other people start shuffling about, or you open a window to let in the traffic noise, youll find yourself reaching for the remote to turn it up - and will notice that moving the volume bar from half-way to full-bung doesnt make that much of a difference. This is surely the fault of the hidden speaker system - something flat panel TV manufacturers seem to be very big on these days. But like the extra pixels, I cant see how this supposed design improvement is of any real benefit to the consumer.
This is my first (technically second!) LCD TV, and it seems to me that this kind of technology still has a LONG way to go before we can simply unpack, relax and enjoy it the way we used to enjoy our old CRTs. Others may disagree, but the two main things I want from a TV are image and sound quality. I couldnt care less if a unit is 90mm thick instead of 9mm - I watch it from the front, not the side. Similarly, I would be quite happy to have two full length speakers bolted onto the sides, if it improved general audibility.
I have given this TV 3 stars for its 3-in-1 functionality, and the fact that it is far from the worst of the many smaller LCD units I have looked at in shops or researched on the internet - the reasons Ive decided to keep it. If you, like me, are moving to LCD from CRT, I would recommend having a look at it in action before parting with your hard earned cash. Unless your eyesight is flawless, I would also recommend thinking about a model with a lower resolution.
Hope youve found this useful!

The picture is excellent and the sound quality is fine, volume is more than sufficient for a small room which the set is designed for. I would recommend this item without hesitation.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 01Jun2009 | | | This T/V did everything it said on the box. Started immediately it was pluged in and prompted to tune all channels. No problems, the easiest T/V I have ever set up.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 14May2009 | | | This is a fantastic little TV. I wanted a replacement for a 19` LCD computer monitor that could be used as a tv as well and this does both very well. I looked at several other TV and although some work better as just a TVs and some work better as a monitor, none could beat both and most didnt have a built in DVD player. Sound is a little on the quiet side but its perfect for a bedroom. The refresh rate is a little slow but you only really notice it occasionally. Contrast and colour saturation require a little fiddling with to get a decent blend but generally pretty good straight from the box. Very easy to setup and very easy to use. The EPG is a little annoying in the respect that it changes channels as you scroll through but its not the end of the world. basically if youre looking for a smallish TV for a spare room etc then I dont think there is anything better on the market right now.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 13May2009 | | | Was hesitant of previous reviews, but with Amazons returns policy was happy to assume that software glitch had been fixed, and it has. No issues in the firmware of the TV/ DVD I received.
Great picture, sound not an issue, would recommend to anyone.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 28Apr2009 | | | This is quite simply an excellent product, it arrived on time was easy to assemble and link to my other electronic products and give an excellent picture. I bought it for use in the bedroom and the sound quality is very good. The built in DVD is also excellent and symple to use.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 27Apr2009 | | | A very good portable combi TV that was easy to set up.Picture quality is generally good and DVD playback quality, whilst variable,is of reasonable standard.Having kept the original box it is lightweight and easy to transfer between several locations.Overall a good buy for our purposes.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 12Apr2009 | | | We bought this combination TV a week or so ago for the kids; so our priority was to minimise clutter and cables by having the TV, DVD and digital tuner all in one box. Its amazing how hard it is to find good TVs that can do this!
Anyway the box arrived fairly promptly from Amazon, at an excellent price, and I rigged everything up with only a cursory glance at the instructions. As expected the unit started looking for analogue and digital channels and when finished I settled down and was instantly happy with the picture. There was a bit of blocking going on though and so I did wonder how good the digital tuner was but this appears to have gone away now.
The only problem really is that the volume is just too low for an ordinary room. Were had it at the maximum on some evenings and even then you certainly cant talk and listen. However now that Ive plugged the TV into my stereo system the sound is obviously much louder and easier to here.
So all in all a fine TV thats let down by its sound. OTOH I havent messed around with the digital channels like other reviewers and so may or may not encounter the dreaded digital failure gremlin....
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 18Feb2009 | | | Bought this TV / DVD combi after reviewing many different products. There isnt many reknowned brands selling 22` combis so being a Toshiba with a good specification I thought Id give it a go. I thought it was an excellent buy at £278 from Amazon. Used Super Saver Delivery and it arrived in 3 days. The TV worked fine initially. I switched it on and I was prompted to tune in the channels. It did this without any problems and all analogue and digital channels were tuned in. It has an excellent build and picture quality and the EPG and menus are simple to use. The DVD player is excellent too. My only negative comments are (though I can easily live with these): (1) the sound loudness isnt really sufficient (2) the tv channel changes as you scroll through the EPG (3) a noticeable high pitch humming noise when its in standby However, after entering the Channel Organiser and re-ordering a channel I found I then got a Error - Cannot Access Digital Services problem. This prevents any digital channels from being viewed. I tried re-setting the TV to the original factory settings which switches the set off and then prompts to re-tune the channels when its switched on again, however this then only tuned in the analogue channels and completely skipped the digital ones. Toshiba Helpdesk has asked me to return the TV to Amazon. Shame I really like the TV and I would have otherwise rated it at 5 star.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 16Feb2009 | | | Bought one of these sets for my daughter and she is very pleased with the picture quality and the built in DVD player is also excellent. I would give it 5 stars, however the colours of these mid range LCDs are not quite good enough, but Id still recommend you purchase one, as the alternative budget combi models are very poor, in my opinion.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 15Feb2009 | | | TV arrived 4 days after ordering on free delivery. Very neat little TV ideal for bedroom use with built in freeview, dvd/cd player. Easy to set up and a recommended buy.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 11Feb2009 | | | Bought this TV and was pleased with the picture from both DTV and DVD but its really let down by the sound. On installing the TV I noticed that the sound did not seem very loud. TV broadcasts are not as bad as on a DVD when on quiet sections the TV volume was on full and it was just at a pleasant level. Unless you have this is a confined area or you can guarantee no ambient noise I wouldnt recommend it purely for the sound but a good TV if you can run through an external audio source. Returned to Amazon (as usual exemplary customer service) and purchased the 26` version without the DVD and more than happy with that.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 11Feb2009 | | | I PURCHASED THE 19` AND 22` THROUGH AMAZON. THE 22` HAS THE SAME FAULT AS THE OTHER REVIEWERS HAD, APART FROM I DID NOT EVEN REORGANISE THE CHANNELS. IT JUST SAYS `DIGITAL SERVICE NOT AVAILABLE`. I KNOW MY DIGITAL SERVICE IS OK AS I HAVE A 37` TOSHIBA DOWNSTAIRS AND THE INITIAL SET UP IS THE SAME. AT LEAST IT GOT ONE STEP FUTHER THAN THE 19` THAT DID NOT EVEN POWER UP. WHAT A WASTE OF MY TIME. DONT WASTE YOURS- STEER WELL CLEAR !
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 08Feb2009 | | | I bought this TV from Amazon and when I tuned in the channels (both Analogue and Digital), everything was working within 5 minutes.
However, after manually resorting all of the Digital channels so that they were ordered contiguously (i.e. move all the non-watched and TopTv channels to the higher EPG numbers), I encountered a major issue.
Turning the TV on the following day presented me with a message stating `ERROR CANNOT ACCESS DIGITAL SERVICES`. I contacted Toshiba Technical Support and was told that I have to return the TV, as this error cant be fixed.
Dodgy TV firmware to blame I think!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 07Feb2009 | | | Another amazing buy from Amazon - saving myself over £60.00s over Comets RRP!!!! The TV itself is very asthetically pleasing but if I have one niggle over its looks, its that it has half a dozen little emblems (HDMI / DiVx etc) painted in white along the bottom of the screen..Why??? I can never understand why manufacturers do this. Other than that its reasonably slim, with a lovely glossy black colour and very little in the way of border (ie no off-putting 3` of plastic surrounding the screen). The tv attached seemlessly to my Vogels 6105 wall bracket without the need for futher brackets. Function wise, it tuned itself in less than 2 minutes and I would describe the picture quality as very good. You can adjust to your own liking but I find the default setting meets my needs. I have good digital reception where I live so the actual broadcasted image quality is superb. It sounds very good to. The built-in DVD player is very good, with very little in the way of noise coming from it. The menus are easy to navigate and intuitive. My only complaint is that as you scroll the EPG the tv channel changes. This means if youre looking to see whats on, say, Film 4, if youre already watching BBC1, you skip through the channels as you make your way to Film 4s position. This is a bit frustrating if youre listening to something whilst browsing the EPG. Does that make sense??? Overall I give this tv 4 stars. Mines for the bedroom and its perfect for that. It would be great for a kitchen, conservatory or the kids playroom!! I think the person who rated it 1 star has just been unlucky.

Feels well made with nice action on the dvd slot - robust but smooth... Not a noisy dvd either.. Well worth the money...

Loads of features on the handset....I must study the handbook over a cuppa one day soon,as its packed with info on all the button features. It looks very smart in its glossy piano black finish, response time is top notch too.....no fuzzy edging or blurring.....all in all I am very pleased with my purchase. 10/10!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 04Jan2009 | | | I bought this TV, and it only worked properly for about 2 hours. After this time, the digital service stopped working, so I could only watch analogue. The Toshiba helpline told me that this was a known problem that their engineers are working on, and to return the TV. I dont know what proportion of their stock are affected, but we will not be trying another set to find out. BUY WITH CAUTION.
