USB Drivers Buyers Guide
The USB interface has become very popular for all types of hardware devices, such as digital cameras, printers, external hard drives, flash memory sticks, Bluetooth dongles, scanners and a lot more besides. USB drivers are the software that allow higher level computing programs to interact with a USB hardware device. A good analogy would be that they are interpreters that translate what a user tells a computer program to do, into a language that the USB hardware device can understand. An example would be MS Word demanding a document be printed on a USB printer. Word issues the command, but as you can have any printer connected to your computer, Word itself cannot communicate with all of them. The USB drivers' job is to translate what Word is asking into a language that the printer can understand. Thus, USB drivers themselves are both device and operating system specific. This means that you need the correct USB driver for both the device and the operating system.
Fortunately most USB devices that require drivers will come with them, normally on a CD. However, if you are using an unusual operating system (such as Linux) the appropriate USB drivers may not be included. In this case you can download the drivers from the internet if they are available (normally for free). Even if the appropriate drivers were included for your operating system you may find that updated drivers are available online, which will make your USB device work better, or perhaps fix a problem you are having with the device. The only thing you need to be careful of is making sure you get the correct drivers for the exact model of your USB device and your operating system (the correct version of Windows), otherwise you risk your device not working correctly, or at all.
