Violins Buyers Guide
Violins can be exciting instruments, whether you are a beginner or an advanced player. Violins are both a complex instrument to buy and yet for someone new to music, an excellent instrument on which to start.
Violins come in a range of prices with an older instrument often costing more than a new one. You should have a very clear idea as to your budget before you start looking. Be realistic about your commitment to the instrument, particularly when buying childrens' first violins. As you progress you may need to replace the violin as your tastes and requirements alter.
Even if you play reasonably well, it is a good idea to take someone with you who will give you an honest opinion as to how the instrument sounds. Violins come in a range of sizes to suit children and adults; therefore it is important that you choose the right size for you as an individual, rather than choosing a violin that "should" be right for your age group. If you are not confident about playing in front of other people, ask an experienced violin player to play the instrument. If possible ask them to play something fairly complex to see what the instrument is capable of. Compare the tones of several violins and even if you are not an expert, your ears should be able to tell you which violins, if any, sound better.
When you pick up the instrument yourself, feel whether the instrument is comfortable for you. You should not hear any creaking from the wood of the violin when you put pressure on the strings. The bridge should be set up correctly and you should not be able to catch the other strings whilst playing. You should check that the bow plays the string smoothly. Look along the length of the bow to make sure it is straight. Make sure that the bow can be adjusted to suit you.
When you have made your choice and before buying, check whether it is possible to try the instrument for a week or two and change or return it if you are not happy.
