These are very versatile tools as they not only vacuum dry dirt but can clean up all manners of messy liquid spills as well. Some will even shampoo your carpet and upholstery and are normally bought as a secondary cleaner in the household. They come in a variety of sizes to suit most situations, (from garage cleans ups to unblocking the sink) and the larger and more powerful ones will cost the most.
Motor size This is measured in watts, so the higher the wattage, the more powerful the machine will be. More powerful machines generally have much better suction and so will do the job faster.
Functions All these types of cleaners will suck up dry and wet debris and more recent models are now easier to switch from one mode to the other. Models with larger water tanks are generally more expensive than the smaller ones but will need emptying less often so may be worth the extra outlay. Some will shampoo carpet and others will wash hard floors.
Filters Most cleaners will have some type of filter. Consider how often this will need to be replaced or whether it can be washed and reused. Some will also have the option of special filters that trap more dirt and bacteria. This may be a useful feature it you’ll be using your machine for vacuuming indoors.
Attachments Most machines will come with a hose and at least two different cleaning heads; one for wet and one for dry. Models that shampoo carpets will come with a specialised head for the job. Some will also have a range of other tools for more specific jobs, like tackling a blocked drain or removing pet hair. Having the right attachments for jobs like these may save you having to call out an emergency plumber so might be well worth looking at!
Size This varies; most wet and dry cleaners are usually larger and heavier than an average vacuum cleaner and some can be much more cumbersome to move around. Look for a model with large wheels as this makes it much easier to handle, and a good length of hose for ease of use. Some manufacturers will also show the weight of the cleaner, a useful fact to bear in mind if you’ll be carrying it.
GENERAL These cleaners can be worth their weight in gold especially in an emergency clean-up situation, such as your washing machine flooding! Choose one that’s quick and easy to operate and comfortable to use, so that it doesn’t sit idly in your garage taking up valuable space. They can be used for all the dirty jobs around the home, garden and workshop and can be especially useful if you have pets.
