Im looking to replace it. There are better ones on the market now, but a bit more expensive. Slim Devices - squeezebox duet - will be out soon... If this does review well, Ill get a standard squeezebox v3.
Like a previous reviewer, I use TwonkyVision music server to stream music to it. I use a mac/unix and, at the time, it was only packaged with windows streaming software, hence I bought Twonky...
I havent had too many problems connecting, but it does take small amount of fiddling. For example, I couldnt connect without WEP, but I can easily with WEP. This is usually the other way around - open connection before adding security.
Browsing for music is a little slow, and it does need to be reset occasionally (it has also reset itself once or twice). Even so, it has been very good, and was a bargain for what it does - all your music in one, searchable, place. Ill keep it for another room.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating:  Date Reviewed: 06Feb2008 | | | I bought this unit for myself last Christmas (2004) in the hope that the 3,000 plus tracks I have stored on my PC would be instantly accessible to my hi-fi downstairs. I have a fairly up-to-date PC (Dell 2400, 256Mb, 80Mb hard disc) and a Netgear router (108Mbps) which is about 8 to 10 yards from my hi-fi. The MP101 was situated on top of my hi-fi. I have other laptops using the wireless link with no trouble. My knowledge/skill level, I think, is pretty high as I have been working with computer software and hardware in the IT business for around 20 years. With the out-of-the-box software loaded the performance, at best was intermittent. Basically, you want to just come in and play something like you would using a standard hi-fi. The MP101 cannot provide that predictability. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it just kept rebooting. I then purchased the Twonyvision mediaserver software to try and improve the connectivity and although it did improve performance, it still was inconsistent in its startup you just never know if it was going to work, A real, real shame. In the end I sold it on eBay for £50 with this story attached (just so the purchaser knew what they may be letting themselves in for!). I now plug my Creative Zen 20Gb player directly into my hi-fi and you know what, it plays striaght away! Obviosuly no remote doing i this way, but I need the exercise! The idea behind the MP101 is fantastic, the technology is just not quite there yet!

so everyone seems to be saying that the twonki software is better than the stuff you get with the machine, well I installed the server off the disc and it was fine, eventually it made my PC run out of its 2GB of RAM! however I then downloaded the update (software and firmware) which had the RAM issue listed on its bug fixes.
slightly worried about the fact that there are still known issues with the software when handling large volumes of songs, amd there hasnt been a software update for a year....hmmmmm
its still working fine for me (3 and a half thousand songs in, but I have only ripped my record collection up to the letter C!!!)
obviosuly youll end up making mistakes when ripping and need to edit large volumes of ID3 data to make your record collection work, I have been using tag&edit which is an awesome bit of sharware (you have to pay eventually, but its probably worth it)
I had a lot of trouble setting up the wireless network, so plugged in an ethernet cable, and it worked fine....I have now got it working on the wireless network, maybe I am just simple, but this is what I did wrong, on my router I entered the encryption code, I then asumed that was the `passcode` that you can enter in the wireless set up on the MP101, however, I then realised I could enter hexidecimal pass codes directly in to the `key` sections of the MP101, and once I did that it all worked. even though I have a wireless network, I have always used ethernet cables, seemed more simpe! so its probably my lack of experience with wireless networking that got me confused.
whats my biggest complaint? no buttons on the unit, god I hate hunting for remote controls!! however it seems only the turtlebeach wireless MP3 player features buttons (and thats unavailable) so instead of waiting another year for a machine to be developed that has a feature like `buttons`! I gave in and got it....greatest thing I have ever done!
anyway back to the CD ripping!
