Wood Turning Buyers Guide
Wood turning is a technique used to make wooden objects using a lathe. Unlike other woodworking techniques, the wood moves while the cutting and shaping tool remains stationery - often creating very intricate designs and shapes.
Wood turning tools are made generally from steel, with different types available offering variable durability, ease of turning and price. They all require regular sharpening as the wood blunts them fairly quickly, so additional sharpening tools are also needed, with a specialist jig being an essential piece of kit for maintaining turning blades.
Roughing gouges are another essential tool, used initially around the wooden spindle to shape the wood roughly, as well as spindle gouges for creating beads, coves and details. Again, the quality of the steel used in the blade will determine the frequency between sharpening.
A skew chisel is a highly pointed chisel use to create flat smooth spindles, details and cut beads. Parting tools create straight edges between small and large sections and hollowing tools cut deep patterns and shapes or create vessels. A scraper is also needed to scrape away the wooden fibres, to smooth off rough edges. There are a wide range of other specialist wood turning tools though for special effects, or for combining different tool functions - for example chisel and skew tool combinations.
In addition to the quality of the steel used in the blade, the handle type is important. Many woodworkers prefer traditional wooden handles but more modern designs will offer pre-formed handles made of plastic or other composite materials which may offer greater comfort.
Finally, it is essential that you purchase (and use!) a decent pair of safety glasses to prevent eye injury from wood chippings or dust.
