When I bought CoD I was somewhat pleased, I wasnt too keen on the single player and the game just had that `rushed` feel, after I had done Veteran I decided to have a go at the Nazi Zombies varient, which is fun but does get boring and repetative after a while, the maps are okay but I would recomend Halo 3 or CoD 4 instead.

The build up to call of duty world at war was a bit over hyped because people forgot that it was going back to world war 2 and the weapons would be the same you have used in previous COD titles at first there was some major flawes in the game but after the updates now 1.5 it has become a brilliant game to play alot smoother and enjoyable if your a COD4 lover then dont expect the same fast gameplay you remember its a bit more toned down in WaW but still great multiplayer.

Like many I eagerly anticpated CoDs return to the WW2 genre that made its name. Especially after the superb diversion that was Modern Warfare but I have to say that I am very disappointed that the developers have not continued to develop the genre and adopt a few of the things, like a well written plot that made MW such a great game.

Dont get me wrong, its still fun to play but nowhere near as good as it could have been. For example:

* Story - pants compared to MD. In fact, is there a story or plot at all?
* Linear game play - theres usually only one route that works per level and things like small barriers are impossible obstacles that effectively funnel the game play in one direction all the time. Boring, boring, boring!
* Shoot from cover - why is CoD the only FPS that doesnt allow you to shoot from behind an obstacle?
* Weapon selection - please can we have a choice as to what wed like to use / think is appropriate for the level? And after weve spent ages looking for that certain weapon, can we at least retain it for the next level?
* Weapon realism - come on guys, Jap SMGs were like hens teeth not carried by every other soldier!
* Fight AND Die - whats the point of having a team who stand four feet from an enemy and blat rounds at him which all miss then said enemy takes you down with one shot? Why does the player have to do 90% of all the fighting in this game, with no thought?

I could go on but this would be a very long, increasingly negative review. In short, if you want WW2 arcade style FPS then go for MOH Airborne, if you want an FPS where stealth and intellgience are required then its Rainbow Six and if you want WW2 FPS with strategy and a team worth having then try BOB Hells Hghway.

I await CoD MW2 with bated breath...

I played COD5 to death before trying COD4, and found it astonishingly playable. Went through the campaign in about 10 hours and couldnt put it down in the process! The variety of levels keeps your interest and the array of guns and challenges does too. The realism of war is really intense and the commentary throughout the game makes it feel like your in the battle field!

The multiplayer is where it comes into its own, providing dozens of challenges, together with guns and in level accomplishments! The site of getting +5 on your screen with a shot or a bomb kill really makes you want to come back for more and then to make it more addictive is the streak kill dominations! Recon, artilary and dogs!(love calling dogs!) With these you can watch ure streak kill go up and up and then compare it with ure mates or lobby players! The maps are very detailed and challenging and all have hotspots or camp points were you can just sit and reap the rewards!!

A must have game even though the reviews for this installment havent been through the roof! Cant see anything wrong with it!!!! Off to review COD4 now!

Like with nearly all FPS shooters I have ever played on various consoles, I felt the single player mode was less then compelling. Yes it is smooth and the graphics cant be faulted but there is little in the way of tension or investment in characters which can be found in more atmospheric games.

However, where it really comes into its own is in multiplayer. For the most part, the game plays perfectly. Most of the maps are well balanced and there is a good mix of frantic action and stealth tactics. Replay value is superb, particularly if you have a number of friends in on it.

That said, I find respawn points irritating, some of the perks (juggernaught anyone?) a bit on the ridiculous side, and more should be done to accommodate the Hardcore mode (GIVE US HEADQUARTERS!). Prestige mode could do with a few more incentives, too.

I could carry on picking on minor faults, but that would be doing the game a disservice. If you are an Xbox Live player, just go out and buy it!

Sadly the latest patch to fix certain bugs seems only too have added more into the general game play on the online multiplayer game. 99% of online play is filled with modded or glitched players who you simply have no effect upon on core mode. Hardcore mode has its fun elements if you can be bothered to stay up past the kiddies bed times, then you are liable to get a half decent game.
I was thoroughly enjoying this game online until the last fix then the amount of players that will just pass through the terrain etc just got stupid beyond belief.

In summary:
A nice single player game if you are unfamiliar with COD but a hugely dissapointing online game from them :( hopefully they will fix it soon.

Edit:
Ok after a little more play and getting to know the generel rules I am quite happy in saying stay away from this game ... there is absolutely no back up for it with cheating on the Xbox and to be honest its just boring through and through ... thoroughly disappointing especially given the heritage of the game! I honestly cant remember when I last played a game as bad as this ... I m going back to playing COD3 as it was soooo much better

I bought this on a bit of a whim because I have Modern Warfare and, well, this has co-operative gameplay AND multiplayer so I thought could play with my friends. Its now part of my game library and itll probably stay there.

The Good:

- Co-operative gameplay. The Ability to complete the single player campaign with friends is something that is being adopted by more and more games (see Left 4 Dead for a better example)and it is used to good effect here.
- Rich, well made environments. They really are good, especially the Berlin ones.
- High production values. This game is so well made in terms of visuals. All the linking movies are something special and the voice acting is top notch.

The Bad:

- The single player campaign is very linear, very led, and gets really boring, really quickly.
- Respawning. If you dont hit a certain, mysterious checkpoint then the enemies keep coming and coming. I thought we were past this? Remember Gauntlet?
- Terrible Weapons. It used to be that a seasoned player could dispense with the pray and spray weapons and opt the Kar98k. But now the bolt action rifles are next to useless. Eh? Even the little I know about firearms tells me this is utter nonsense...
- Lag. Even in the single player there seems to be a lag and death is cheated again. Worse in Multiplayer.
- Collision Detection. I have died on numerous occasions because a tuft of grass has to be jumped over rather than just run past.
- Stupid AI. Your comrades are about as thick as ironing boards and the enemy is even worse...
- ...Except: grenade throwing. Most Japanese soldiers would make it as out-fielders for the NY Yankees.

Essentially, Call of Duty should be made by Infinity Ward and Infinity Ward only. They make the best Call of Dutys.

This is a poorly made game. Its not the production values or the models or the music or the textures - its the nuts and bolts of the game that make this so bad. You die a lot because the person you shot evades your bullets, or a stupid comrade gets in the way because the enemy threw another alarmingly accurate nade. In the end it becomes frustrating and when you go back to Modern Warfare to compare you realise how accurate the weapons are and how good players are not frustrated by the mechanics or the physics with it.

I would say: avoid and wait for Modern Warfare 2 in Q4.

Call of Duty 4 is the best gam ever in my eyes and when they mde this I thought it would be better. Better Graphics, Better Gameplay and better Story.

I was wrong.

Graphics seem worse. Gameplay is exact same. Story is only different becuase of time setiings but it seems boring.

If Infinity Ward made this it wold be better than the previous one. Dont buy it and waste £40. Buy COD 4.

After the success of the forth one lots of people were wondering if going back to World War 2 was a mistake! Well I can tell you that not one bit this game is still as exciting and playable then the 4th and previous. The forth one still remains my favourite of the Call of Duty games but this is by far no means far off. I started getting into the series from the 2nd one and being an Achievement whore I played through on Veteran and even though it was mega hard I found the experience so much more rewarding. COD3 slightly divered and then they set the bar with the 4th game but this one is fantastic for a world war two games. I started playing it on Veteran like the others and there are some really hard spots which take a lot of patients and require you to move slowly.

You play between both the Americans against the Japanese featuring Kiefer Sutherland voicing one of the marines, while Gary Oldman is the main voice for the Russians against the Nazis. The graphics are outstanding and everything looks spot on including explosions and the newly welcomed flame thrower.
I really loved the difference between fighting against the Germans and Japanese. The Japanese soldiers who have a suicide attack and they also hide in trees and hidden holes in the grasses. These levels frequently feature Call of Dutys first flamethrower, and its one of my favourite weapons. Not only does it make quick work of your enemies. If you see enemy troops climbing a tree or afraid there maybe one hiding in the tall grasses ahead? Burn it down.......Quality
The Japanese will shout at you before running in a kamikaze way, ounce you hear it, it puts you on high alert as you franticly look around for them and the direction they, may attack you.

There are a few parts in World at War that you can tell have been taken from COD4 which include a Sniper mission and also a Plane mission. Both are better in COD4 but these are still very good. There is also a tank mission like in some of the previous games however I found this very easy even on Veteran and never provided a challenge although I did get my Achievement for completing a level without dying and I felt great for getting it on a level on veteran.

Live is brilliant and very addictive, although not a patch on COD4 this is still a very good game and high recommend by myself so If you like FPS consider this game

I would like to start off by saying that before I got this game i didnt have any call of duty games. The only shooter that I really played before this was halo 3, which is brilliant. As this was my first COD game, i didnt really know what to expect. As soon as I started playing though I new that this game was great.

The single player mode is fantastic. Whilst other games single player mode is basic and linear so that the game can focus on online play, in COD:WaW it is a lot of fun. The battles are immense and the stmosphere is amazing, along with the graphics. The audio is incredible as you can actually pinpoint enemies just by listening to the sound of them shouting of the echoes of their guns. In veteran diffuculty it is a huge challenge but you get a 30G achievement for every mission you complete on this difficulty.

The online, however, is even better. The servers do sometimes cause problems such as not being able to connect to certain people in certain game modes. When it works though, it is brilliant. The sheer amount of weapons you can use and the perks you can enable mean that this game is as much about tactics as it is about shooting.

The best thing about this game though, is the Nazi Zombies mode. This mode is a huge challenge but is also a huge amount of fun. Running around using points to buy weapons to shoot zombies is great fun. The new zombie map pack which is available on xbox live marketplace is a real must have. The battles are intense and feel like a real firefight, unlike the basic running around having one on ones with random people that you get in other games. You adapt to the online very quickly so there is no case of constantly being outclassed. Overall then, this game is easily on of the best I have ever played on the xbox.

I am not a die hard C.O.D fan, but I dont mind them when I rent or get to borrow one of someone, I enjoyed this game for the most part, you can see that it is trying to be not quite as linear as previous titles, there is a lot more little things to do than just run and shoot, the AI is pretty intelligent and there real good with there grenades. (as you will discover over and over again.) It seems long enough but then I am not a great FPS shooter so it could be short to experienced C.O.D ers.
But despite its best efforts it is still pretty linear and repetative so try and rent or borrow or at least buy 2nd hand

I cant belive i wasted my money on this. It is without a doubt THE worst call of duty ever made. The missions are barely distinguishable from eachother and very repetitive. The graphics are definitly a step down from COD4 (which is the ultimate call of duty) the guns feel weak and dont do anywhere near enough damage, you sometimes have to shoot an enemy up to 5 or 6 times to kill them, The multiplayer is brilliant to start with but it got boring after just a month or 2 and prestige doesnt feel as rewarding as on COD4. And trying to play in veteran is just ridiculous. You get shot through brick walls and constantly spammed by more grenades than you can count, and your squadmates are useless, they just run around occasionally shooting but rarely hitting anything, so you spend about 90% of your time being pinned down and the rest being killed in infuriatingly unrealistic and stupid circumstances. Your £40 is much better spent of Fallout:3 or Far cry 2.

COD4 was one of the more recent gaming masterpieces. A genuine next-gen game that really showcased 360/PS3s ablities. The single player campaign, although painfully short was brilliantly designed and varied. Infinity Ward really did themselves proud and its still showing even today. Im guessing the difference in numbers between COD4 and this isnt much at all.

Treyarchs last attempt at COD (COD3) was quite hit and miss. Well a lot `miss` to be honest. The single player wasnt a patch on COD2, level design was bland, the story was barely even there, the frame rate dropped on occasion. It seemed like a rushed release to be honest. It made me think twice about buying COD4. Luckily Infinity Ward not only revived the series, they evolved it. With this in mind I was always a bit sceptical about WAW. But Treyarch had been given 2 years on this one, so maybe they have sorted the problems out.

Not really.

The single player campaign is, to be fair, a big improvement on COD3. Graphically as good as COD4, the shattered limbs, flame throwing and better level design all add something to the franchise. But its still WW2, and there is only so much you can do with this setting that hasnt been done before. With the advanced weaponary and technology COD4 was able to incorporate new and fun objectives (the helicpoter scouting mission was a particular highlight). For that reason, finishing the game still feels a bit flat, I didnt want to come back for more, nor did I want to go through it again.

Multiplayer is fun, for a while. The levels and guns arent a patch on COD4 though(to be fair, again the setting has a lot to do with this) and I got bored after about a month after release and went back to the previous game.

Its not that its a bad game, far from it. As a stand alone title its really good and I would advise trying to treat it as such, its just that (along with many others) WW2 is tired now and people want something different. Im sure the next instalment will be a return to form (infinity ward developed) though and I very much look forward to release.

This game is just dreadfull, the enmey seen to have amazing grenade throwing abilities, they can throw a grenade from a hundred yards over a high wall and still hit you, they can shoot thru the smallest of gaos even when you have the stupid freindly AI in the way. Its a waste of time having a team in this game because the enmey run at you and the team do nothing to get them off you, do they throw grenades back at the ememy ? No. Do they shoot them to protect you ? No. DO they get in your way when theres a bloody grenade right next to you ? you be they do. This game is a massive set back in the series im really thinking hard hard about any redeming feature for this game and ive just thought of one ...........
you get £25 if you trade it in at gamestation.

After these shocker im really thinking about not getting COD 6, if its anything like this ill be pulling out my hair again.

when COD5 came out i was expecting it to be nowhere near as good as COD4 as its set in WW2 but it is amazing. Superb graphics make the game feel so realistic. Story play mode is good aswell, a nice long story not one you can complete in a day aswell. In this game you play as an american and a russian soldier swithching between the two every few levels. You also have a great selection of guns such as the MP40, Flamethrowers and Brownings! But really i think the best part of this game is the finish! You see when you finish the story mode you unlock Nazi Zombies. This is when you are set in a small building and Nazi Zombies trie to eat you! Great fun and i would recomend it to anyone.
