Imagine a game which combined the polish, presentation and licensing of FIFA and the shear realism, playability and game engine of Pro Evo. The result would be gaming perfection! Sadly the most recent John Maddens isnt quite this game, the players wear helmets for starters and the ball isnt round. However what Maddens does is provide a sporting experience with all of the above. It has the usual EA polish but the game engine is more akin to Pro Evo than Fifa in that the controls are so smooth and the AI is top notch. It may not be everyones cup of tea but this is an example of how a sports game should be.The one gripe is that is with many 360 games there are less options than the PS2 versions of recent years. Such as the create a franchise option. This is possibly due the extra memory taken up be on line play which more than makes up for it. The problem with Maddens as with Pro Evo is How do you improve on near perfection.Pro Evo 4 and Maddens 05 almost cant be beaten.

Some genius at EA decided to stop letting you have full control of the teams and now all you can do is control your created player. It gets better because now when you are using your player you get given a view right up up his backside so you cant see anything thats going on around you. Now with previous Maddens you get a proper demonstration of all the controls and the new features etc. But someone had a moment of genius and decided that they would get rid of that and now all you have are written instructions. The franchise mode is crap because now all you do is play the games and thats it. My advise to anyone wanting to buy an american football game is to save your money and buy madden 06 which is a far better game.

Throw in customised commentary to your team, unbelievable stadiums, and a fantastic superstar mode where you go from zero to hero and the game is a fantastic representation of american football.
